All the streaming devices have an optional Guest mode which allows others to use the device but with some restrictions. Google Chromecast is not an exception, it also has a Guest mode. This mode allows your friend or any family member’s smartphone to cast the content to Chromecast without connecting to the home network. If you want to set up guest mode and allow others to use the Guest mode, follow the below instructions.


  • Google Chromecast
  • A TV with HDMI port
  • Smartphone
  • Wi-Fi connection

Pre Requisite

  • Connect your Google Chromecast to the HDMI port of the TV
  • Make sure that your smartphone and Chromecast are connected to the same Wi-Fi network

How to Set up Guest Mode?

Only the host can set up the Guest mode in Chromecast. If you set up the Guest mode, any user can cast their own content on your Chromecast. To set up the Guest mode, you need the Google Home app. If you don’t have the app, install it from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Step 1: Open the Google Home app on your smartphone.

Step 2: Click on your Chromecast device.

Step 3: On the next screen, click the Settings icon on the top of the screen.

Step 4: Scroll down and click on Guest Mode.

Step 5: Click on the Guest Mode toggle button to turn on.

How to Cast in Guest Mode

In the Guest mode, one can cast to Chromecast without connecting to the same Wi-Fi network. The casting smartphone must have an internet connection to cast in the Guest Mode.

Step 1: Open any of the Chromecast supported apps and click on the Cast icon.

Step 2: Your smartphone will look for a nearby Chromecast device. Click on it to cast.

Step 3: When a nearby device tries to cast to Chromecast, the Chromecast automatically sends the Guest Mode PIN. If it fails, you need to enter the pin manually.

Step 4: When the PIN verification is done, play any video. It will be cast to your Chromecast.

NOTE: You can find the PIN on the ambient screen or in the Google Home app.

Step 5: If you want to stop the casting process, click the Cast icon and choose Stop Casting.
